PIERRE, S.D. – Former state legislator Richard Waddell of Isabel passed away on Oct. 28, 2016.  Waddell, 94, served in the South Dakota Senate from 1983 to 1990.   Gov. Dennis Daugaard has ordered flags to fly half-staff at the State Capitol on Monday, Oct. 31, the day of Waddell’s funeral.

PIERRE, S.D. – Gov. Dennis Daugaard has ordered flags to fly half-staff at the State Capitol in honor of former Secretary of State Joyce Hazeltine on Saturday, Oct. 8, 2016, the day of her funeral. Hazeltine, 81, passed away on Friday, Sept. 30, 2016, in Custer. She was South Dakota’s longest-serving secretary of state, serving from 1987 to 2003. Prior to that service, she was the first woman to serve as secretary of the Senate.

NORTH CAROLINA

Governor Pat McCrory has ordered all North Carolina flags at State facilities in Cleveland County to be immediately lowered to half-staff through sunset on Friday, September 16. This order honors the life and service of Shelby Police Officer Tim Brackeen, age 38, who was killed in performance of his duty.

"Ann and I are offering thoughts and prayers to both the Brackeen family and to the Shelby Police Department for the loss of their colleague," said Governor McCrory. "Unfortunately this is another tragic example of the dangers those in law enforcement face in the line of duty each time they put on the uniform. The state is offering any assistance possible to help bring the individual or individuals responsible for his death to justice."

KANSAS
DATE: SEPTEMBER 12 - 17, 2016
In accordance with Executive Order 10-12, Kansas Governor Sam Brownback has ordered flags to be flown at half-staff from sun-up to sun-down in Johnson County to honor Johnson County Deputy Sheriff Brandon Collins. Flags should be lowered immediately today, Sept. 12 and remain at half-staff to sun-down on Saturday, Sept. 17.

Collins spent over 20 years with the Johnson County Sheriff’s Department. He was killed on Sept. 11 when a vehicle struck his patrol vehicle while he was conducting a routine traffic stop. He leaves behind a wife and two daughters and will be mourned by the entire Sheriff’s Office staff.

DATE: SEPTEMBER 11, 2016 - PATRIOT DAY

Sunday, September 11th, 2016 marks the 15-year anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City, the Pentagon, and United Airlines Flight 93 which crashed in suburban Pennsylvania. Patriot Day serves as a remembrance of the lives lost on that September morning.


On Patriot Day, the President directs that the American flag be flown at half-staff at individual American homes, at the White House, and on all U.S. government buildings and establishments, home and abroad. The President also asks Americans to observe a moment of silence beginning at 8:46 AM Eastern time, the time the first plane struck the North Tower of the World Trade Center that morning.


PRESIDENTIAL PROCLAMATION - Please note: Although in this proclamation doesn't mention US flags should be lowered, it is a federal mandate that they are lowered for Sept. 11.

PIERRE, S.D. – Gov. Dennis Daugaard has requested that all flags in the state be flown at half-staff from 8 a.m. until sunset on Friday, Sept. 2, to honor the life of state Rep. Dan Dryden on the day of his funeral.  Rep. Dryden of Rapid City passed away August 30, 2016 at age 72. Dryden had represented District 34 in the State House of Representatives since 2011 and was the vice chair of the House Appropriations Committee.  

RHODE ISLANDDATE: SEPTEMBER 01 - 06, 2016
PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Governor Gina M. Raimondo has ordered all Rhode Island flags to be flown at half-staff at all state facilities and buildings beginning at sunrise on Thursday, September 1, 2016. The flags will remain at half-staff until sunrise on Tuesday, September 6, 2016, in memory of former Pawtucket Mayor James E. Doyle, who passed away last week.    "Andy and I were saddened to hear of Mayor Doyle's passing," Raimondo said. "He was a true fixture in the city of Pawtucket, dedicating his life to serving the public. We send our prayers and condolences to the Doyle family and the people of Pawtucket."  Raimondo also asks Rhode Islanders to lower their state flags as a mark of respect.

ST. PAUL, MN - Governor Mark Dayton has ordered all United States flags and Minnesota flags to be flown at half-staff at all state and federal buildings in the State of Minnesota, from sunrise until sunset on Thursday, September 1, 2016, in honor and remembrance of General John William Vessey, Jr., former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

General John William Vessey, Jr. passed away on August 18, 2016, at the age of 94. General Vessey was born on June 29, 1922, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and had a remarkable 46-year military career, including serving as the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. In 1992, he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
